Sam follows her Passion for Child-Care with Help from the Youth Job Connection Program

Sam was determined to transfer her passion for childcare into a rewarding career path.   Despite initial doubts, Sam discovered that her passion was attainable with the right support.  After hearing about the benefits of the Youth Job Connection (YJC) program from a good friend, Sam came in to YES with the hope that the program could help her as well.

Sam met with Youth Worker, Jordan Bilmer, who understood right away that she had a clear and focused career goal; working with children.  Jordan determined that Sam was eligible and suitable for the YJC program and she started completing the 60 hours of paid pre-employment training that is designed to set up all YJC participants for success on the job.  Sam said that the training and support gave her a boost of confidence.  “Jordan told me to open up and be myself”, Sam explained.  She finished the training more determined than ever to break into the child care field.

Employment Relations Coordinator, Tracy Laffin, worked with Sam and Jordan to find positions where Sam could follow her passion.  The process took a little time.  Finally, with the help of the team at YES, a position at Nanabijou Child Care Centre became a real possibility for Sam.  Tracy set up a “meet and greet” interview with Executive Director Marcia Arpin.  After a successful interview, Sam was offered a child care position.  She started the following Monday.  “ I’m ecstatic” Sam said when she got the offer, “It was like I was running a marathon and I finally reached the finish line.”  Sam is grateful to YES for finding her an opportunity that will launch her career.  “I love teaching children and watching them learn and grow”, Sam said when we talked to her at the Centre.  She plans to go on to study Early Childhood Education so she can continue advancing in her career.

YES would like to thank Nanabijou Child Care Centre for consistently providing opportunities to our clients.  We extend a huge congratulations to Sam for breaking into a field she is so passionate about.
