APPRENTICESHIP SUCCESS NAVIGATOR
Term until December 31, 2021
Established by Nishnawbe Aski Nation, the Oshki-Pimache-O-Win: The Wenjack Education Institute provides culturally appropriate education and training programs through blended delivery methods using e-learning platforms, attending on-campus sessions in Thunder Bay, and by distance learning. We offer choice, accessibility, flexibility in learning opportunities for people seeking new beginnings to improve the quality of their lives through education and training. We are looking for a highly energetic and dynamic individual for the fulltime term position of Apprenticeship Success Navigator to assist students academically, socially and/or personally in an effort to improve student retention, persistence and graduation rates. If you are the successful candidate, you will have an opportunity to contribute to our exciting growth in increasing access to, and success in postsecondary education to learners living in remote and rural locations.
PREFERRED/ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND COMPENTENCIES:
• Knowledge of Apprenticeship in Ontario and pathways to apprenticeship
• University degree, preferably in Education, Indigenous Studies, social services or related area. Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A background in First Nation Education setting would be a definite asset.
• Ability to speak a Nishnawbe Aski Nation language (Cree, Ojibwe or Oji-Cree)
• Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
DEVELOPED COMPETENCIES:
• Knowledge or experience in counseling techniques.
• Proven problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships with First Nations leadership in Nishnawbe Aski Nation and affiliated organizations and partners.
• Ability to travel to remote First Nation communities.
• Hold a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
• Able to work independently to organize, plan, and self-initiate both long-term and short-term goals.
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a small group setting.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular, the ability to empathize and communicate effectively.
• Proven ability to maintain positive working relationships (internally and externally) and to creatively motivate/persuade program participants.
• Excellent written, verbal, computer and presentation skills.
• Specific experience working with Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities, Tribal Councils and affiliated organizations.
