November 2024

With the chill of November setting in, hearing one of our clients reflect on a summer well-spent brought us back to warmer days.  Richard was showing us photos of the time he spent working at Pine Point Resort.   His face lit up as he talked about the place.  It was hard work cleaning and maintaining the cabins and the grounds, but Richard also had lots of downtime where he could explore the area, enjoy the lake and, of course, do some fishing.

Richard had visited YES in the Spring.  He has an ongoing seasonal job working with a local company doing snow removal.  He dropped in to look for a position in maintenance to provide him with an income during the summer months.  With years of experience, Richard had lots of options.  We connected him to the Employment Service program, which provides personal assistance to job seekers of all ages and skill levels.  We wanted Richard to connect to a position that would best suit him, and we helped him explore available positions.  He interviewed with a resort for a position that seemed promising, but it would have required regular use of a computer and Richard wanted something that kept him moving and utilized his existing skills.  When Pine Point Resort posted a position, Matthew, from our Employer Relations team flagged it as a great opportunity for Richard.  He connected the two and Richard was successful in securing the position.

Now back at YES, Richard is preparing for the winter ahead. He has already lined up snow removal work to keep busy through the cold months, but he’s on the hunt for another opportunity to supplement his winter income.  Richard returned to our Resource Area to update his resume and tap into the support available at YES.

With solid winter plans, Richard enjoyed reminiscing with us about his days at Pine Point Resort, and the position that he will be returning to in the Spring.  In the meantime, we look forward to supporting him and ensuring that he maximizes his options and finds meaningful work throughout all four seasons.  We congratulate Richard on his determination and resourcefulness, and we are proud to be part of his journey.

Join us in welcoming Summer to our Career Development Practitioner team! She looks forward to serving clients here at YES and would like to introduce herself with this bio:

“With a background in social services and outreach experience with those facing homelessness, I have been able to see first hand the barriers that individuals face in today’s society. Transitioning from a shelter setting, I have worked alongside those with barriers such as mental health, addictions, and criminal backgrounds. Outside of work, I live an off-grid, introverted lifestyle where you can catch me reading in front of my wood stove with my two dogs.”
