A Visit to YES Launches a Career in Construction for Owen

Owen came to YES Employment Services shortly after earning a welding certificate.  He had a strong work ethic and was highly motivated, but despite his best efforts, landing a job in his field wasn’t coming together. It was word of mouth that pointed him in the right direction.  His mother and a couple of friends suggested he reach out to YES to help connect him to local opportunities and make sure he was on track to conduct an effective job search.

From the moment he walked through the door, Owen felt like he was in the right place. “Everyone was nice, helpful and eager to help me succeed,” he said.

Owen started with an intake appointment for the Employment Service program.  Employment Coordinator-Outreach, Annie Pepin, recognized right away that with his certifications, labour experience and a valid driver’s license, Owen would be a great fit for many of the seasonal jobs that YES was seeing come in from local businesses.  She started by setting Owen up with a solid resume template so he could update his skills which also included “Working at Heights” in addition to his new welding certificate.

Everybody has different needs when it comes to job search.  YES staff members meet clients where they are and focus on what they want assistance with.  For Owen, the priority was clear: he needed job leads. He had been searching extensively for welding work without success.  He was also open to opportunities in construction and landscaping, areas where he had an interest and some hands-on experience.

That’s where the teamwork at YES really paid off for Owen. Employer Relations Coordinator Matthew White had been speaking with James Gunnell at Triad Exterior Contracting.  The company was actively looking for roofers. In a team meeting, Annie and Matt both agreed that this position might be a good match for Owen.  Annie connected with Owen about the opportunity, and he was eager to put his resume forward.  Matthew spoke to James, and an interview was quickly arranged.   After a brief interview on a Friday, Owen was asked if he could start the following Monday. He accepted the position and our team was able to negotiate a placement contract with Triad.

Owen’s story is a great example of how the Employment Service program works.  We work to bring together the right client, the right employer, and the right support at the right time. You can make an appointment to work with one of our Employment Coordinators and receive personal support with your job search.   Just walk in, call,  or request an appointment on our website.  The Employment Service program is funded by Employment Ontario so all the assistance you receive at YES is free.

Community Engagement

YES was thrilled to attend the Westgate High School Powwow on May 30th outside on the school grounds. It was a gorgeous day for the event. Thanks to the organizing team for inviting us to participate.

The Spring theme was looking good at the Kinsmen Centre for the launch of Youth Week. YES joined the Youth Move team for the kick-off brunch. Thanks to the team for inviting us. YES also provided a Resume Workshop for youth participants on May 5th.

Professional Development

Marketing trends were the focus at the SocialWest conference in Calgary from May 27th to 29th. E.D. Lorna Hunda and Marketing Outreach Coordinator Sharon Kovacic took in three busy days of practical programming, strategic perspective and real-world examples. We are eager to implement the new marketing strategies we learned.

Testimonial alert. We are so grateful for all of the local businesses who recognize the value of the programs we deliver. Visit the Employer information page of our website to read the full testimonial from Alex Mirabelli from Big Bear Lawn Care. Take advantage of the Employment Ontario programs that can help you recruit, onboard and retain staff!
