We are seeking a Grief & Bereavement Counsellor to join our team (9 mth contract with possibility of extension). Under the general direction and accountable to the Grief Program Coordinator, the Grief Counsellor is responsible for confidential duties for the purposes of providing counselling support to clients as an employee of Hospice Northwest Services. The Grief Counsellor provides support primarily to grief clients of the organization up to 6 sessions per client, but also inclusive of palliative and caregiver clients dependent on their needs. The counsellor may be supporting clients with higher, complex needs however support should remain grief-focused as per the Mission of the organization. The position is 12 hours/weekly (24hrs bi-weekly) at a rate of $60.00/hourly inclusive of direct client support and administrative duties. This position is a 9-month contract with a possibility of extension.

Duties:

– Providing therapeutic grief counselling (up to 6 sessions/ per client) to clients either in the client’s home, in-office or via telephone

– Maintain confidentiality at all times

– Administrative duties such as recording attendance, brief case notes, reminders, check-ins, completing a Service Agreement, assessments, connecting the client to other services and supports the organization offers and/or providing information about community resources and connecting to other existing supports.

– The Counsellor will work to the best of their ability to: keep the client on task(s), provide clear structure to the session(s), pay attention to dynamics and use wise judgement to encourage the grief healing process, be aware of safety needs and create a space to emphasize inclusiveness, come prepared and keep commitments, and can provide clarity, authenticity, honesty and creativity.

– All oversight and case management of clients that have requested counselling

– Referrals to additional services the organization offers and/or other community agencies for support

-Working directly with other roles to provide client support including the Grief Program Coordinator, Palliative Program Coordinator, and Regional Coordinator.

– Directs and monitors delivery of client services to standards set by Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO)

– Maintain clients lists of active and inactive clients, waitlists, audit lists, and related documentation as required for Accreditation by HPCO

-In collaboration with other staff, ensure that service delivery statistics are reported and data entered into our data management system in a timely fashion

– Assist with the HPCO accreditation preparation and quarterly auditing

– Other duties as required

Communications/Code of Conduct: That client focused palliative care provision requires healthy working relationships among all staff and volunteers, is a fundamental operating principle of Hospice Northwest. All staff will be responsible for maintaining positive and mutually supportive relationships within a professional environment. All staff and volunteers are responsible for exercising strict standards of confidentiality related to all client, volunteer and staff information.

Qualifications:

– Masters Level or equivalent relevant education in Social Work, Psychology, Gerontology and/or a related field in order to provide counselling support.

– Active registration with the College of Social Work and Social Service Work (OCSWSSW) and/or the Ontario College of Registered Psychotherapists and be in good standing.

– Experience providing grief counselling for 5+ years is considered an asset

– Experience in case management, including client service, group facilitation, and planning

– Strong administrative skills with attention to detail
